It can be difficult to totally avoid foods that you have allergies to, so challenges can be used to determine what amount of the food causes reactions. Peanut challenges and milk challenges can be helpful when trying to maintain a healthy diet.
• How long will a Food Challenge take?
The length of time depends on the age of the child and the specific food we are challenging. The procedure is typically 4-5 hours but can be longer.
• Where will my Food Challenge take place?
FAI has very comfortable food allergy suites with TV, Netflix, Wi-Fi, and comfortable seating. Our specialty-trained nurses are with you throughout your procedure.
• Should routine medications be stopped before my Food Challenge?
You must stop all antihistamines five days prior to the procedure. However, any other medications you take should be discussed with your allergist before your food challenge.
• Do I bring my own food to the Food Challenge?
This varies depending on the type of food you are being challenged to. Our specialized team will discuss instructions regarding anything you would need to bring.
• What happens if I PASS my Food Challenge?
It is recommended that you keep the food you were challenged to in your diet routinely as directed by your physician.
• What happens if I FAIL my Food Challenge?
Your physician will discuss the options available to you, such as avoidance of the food, Food Slit or OIT.
