22 Dec Foods to Ease a Gassy Gut
With holiday parties, irresistable snacking, and boundless dessert options, it is not uncommon to have a growly gut.
What is gas? Gas is air in your digestive tract. Common symptoms of gas include burping, passing gas, bloating, and pain in your abdomen. Gas enters your digestive tract when you swallow air and when bacteria in your intestines works to break down foods that are difficult to digest.
What is normal? Although no one may want to admit it, it is normal to pass gas 15-20 times/day. If passing gas seems to be excessive or worsens, it may be worthwhile looking into.
While overeating can be one culprit, keep in mind other behaviors that irritate your bowels:
*Sugar free candy
*Gum with sugar alcohols, such as sorbitol
*Carbonated beverages
*Incorporating too much air while eating which happens when you eat too quickly or sip through a straw
*Too little water
*High fat foods
*Too many fiber rich foods too quickly
So if you overdid it and need to soothe your stomach, here are some foods that will calm your gut:
*Peppermint or Chamomile. Enjoy a mint or tea. Add some raw honey or cinamon for an extra boost
*Drink lots of water. May sound counterintuitive but water will ease bloating and promote faster digestion
*Try a green juice or tea
*Fennel seeds either dissolved in tea or consumed on their own
*Ginger
*Yogurt with probiotics
*Flaxseed
*Pineapple, cucumber, bananas, and papaya all contain enzymes that promote more efficient digestion
Enjoy this holiday season-angry gut free!
