Nutrition Trends 2017

Nutrition Trends 2017

Polluck Communications along with Today’s Dietitian magazine have recently released the results of their 5th annual “What’s Trending in Nutrition” National Food Survey.

According to 1700 dietitians nationwide, nutrition experts have revealed that diets are out and mindful eating is in. This entails having a slower, more thoughtful approach to eating.  Along with that, 59% of consumers will choose to ‘eat clean’ by choosing foods that are less processed and considered more ‘whole’.

The Survey has been considered a leader in identifying and tracking significant food trends each year. Here is their top 10 superfoods list for 2017:

  1. Seeds, like chia and hemp
  2. Avocado
  3. Nuts, like almonds and walnuts
  4. Fermented foods like yogurt
  5. Ancient grains
  6. Kale
  7. Green tea
  8. Coconut products
  9. Exotic fruits
  10. Salmon

What’s Out?

Compared to 2016, the report showed a decline in:

-GMO-free foods

-Gluten free

-Sustainable foods

This may be due to improved food label transparency and food companies altering ingredients lists. In 2017, we are likely going to see more low sodium, sugar-free options.

How Does This Impact the Consumer?

Common sense will always prevail with respect to healthy eating. The best advice is to:

-Enjoy a variety of foods in moderation

-Balance your eating and enjoy foods or alternatives from each food group

-Eat 5-10 vegetables and fruits daily

-Reduce your intake of sugar and high sodium foods

-Keep in mind that how you eat is as important as what you eat. Take the time to sit with your family and enjoy digital-free meals as often as you can.
